After the Smash. by BenjaminCee After the Smash. by BenjaminCee
So my house was broken into yesterday morning.

Here's the story.

I start to stir awake around 5:30, it is light outside.
I hear a gigantic smashing of glass which i am convinced came from the unit below me.
I'm in a complex of four.
I turn off my fan to get a better sound of what the hell is going on.
I sit back on my bed again. I lay down.
Suddenly, my bedroom door opens.
There's some fucking thug just standing there lookin at me and before I can finish saying "hey! get out of here, man..." (actual words i think)
...he has swung the door closed and is gone.

Meanwhile, I am stunned/feeling an ill coming on.

I'm shocked and don't know what the hell is happening nor can i fathom what's about to happen.
I'm thinking it's a robbery. Then I'm thinking more people are coming. I open the door and walk outside with my mini-amp in hand, ready to attempt to clobber this guy.
He's gone out the door he smashed the window to open.

Nothing's moved or gone...my car keys and wallet were on the counter next to the door...
so....I was thinking this was some pervert(or worse) who got unlucky when he saw it was just me there...
I call the police, they come.
Later the forensics guy came to fingerprint the place and only just today, the window was replaced.
I'm pretty well convinced this guy was looking for someone who owed him something.

About three weeks ago,
I 'accidentally' found a document here that must have belonged to a previous tenant. This woman owed something like thirty-five grand to someone.
I didn't think anything of it, never thought that could lead to anything. It's about the best reason I can think of for the 'random' break-in.

Does this happen?
Has this happened to you or anyone you know?? The police told me it's not a common thing and I'd really just thought it was. They got the wrong guy/gal is the most likely reason is what i was told so It kind of backs up the debt thing.

:iconperfectnoseclub: joined me last night for the guarding of the open window while attempting to get sleep. We camped in the middle of the loungeroom (which was actually really really cool, shoulod do it more often) and jumped at the sound of every click/clack/thud.

I realise how bad something like that could have been. So I was real lucky, I know that. I felt pretty sick for a while, about someone invading my space like that, (that and I'd gotten about three hours sleep) Also felt like I needed to move out but it faded as the day went on.

Feels over now so good.

I hope you're doing better now. That is pretty terrifying, but it sounds like you might have had an overzealous bondsmen or loan shark trying to get some money back. Maybe itís time to get an animal companion.

Oh man, so freaking glad you're okay! I've never had my house broken into, but at one place we lived at we had a storage shed that was part of the house and it got broken into by a neighbor boy who stole and broke some of the stuff that was in it.

 ! hehe.

I was feeling the urge to move all over but the idea that it's not even about me sort of calms me down about that.
But...move because the area can seem a bit scary is a good reason...but it's all kinds of shades amazing at the same time...
I'm torn. If there's any sign of ANYthing soon, anything that seems shifty, I'm leaving though.

Something similar happened to me the other day. Someone through a brick through the Sliding door at about 7am in the morning. At first I thought it was a cat that knocked something over but alas it was a burgalry and they stole my laptop :(

oh you are kidding me. a brick?! so you had a window or something they could peer through to see your laptop? that's awful.
and just the other day?? hope it hasn't left a mark of fear in you or anything. if anything, this has made me alert to idiocy.

Yup they saw my laptop from the window :C. But I live in Cape town, South Africa where I've had many experiences like this one -so it was okay. - unlike your experience which sounds like it was VERY disturbing o.O.

No way dude, that's awful. I know exactly how you feel. The same thing happened to me and my housemate a couple of weeks ago.

It was about 1/2am, my housemate came in pissed one night and forgot to lock the front door. He heard a noise at about 4am, and woke up to some random bloke walking into his bedroom. The bloke then legged it. My housemate just went back to sleep and still didn't bother to lock the front door. The lucky thing was, was that the guy must have walked straight passed the lounge where my Xbox and steering wheel etc are, cause nothing was touched. Really weird. We think the guy may have been pissed himself and walked into the wrong house. I couldn't help but feel like the house would be a target for a future break in. Nothing's happened since though.

holy hell.
yeah it really grabs at your throat doesnt it.
That's a huge feeling i've had, that now i'm a target.
This person's walked in and feels familiar with it. BUT if the theory that he was lookin for someone is correct,
which is what it feels like, it's over.

But..... who wakes to someone in their room and then doesnt get so freaked out they dont go lock it and fall back asleep????must have been well pissed.

OMG I'm so glad you're ok! I am glad you have good friends. Could you ask your landlord to add bars to your windows???? I'm so sorry this happened to you.

I should have asked but he was a bit defensive saying nothing has ever happened like that before, etc.
I'd like bars but then they'd have to get bars on all the units i guess. also, the window was covered by insurance...

My house was robbed last year Ben, an awful feeling to have. Thank goodness we weren't in the house when it was being robbed. I feel for ya, hopefully the guy realises the girl has moved and you will feel safe again. Nice that Mel is there with you too. Best of luck mate :)

yes i am real lucky to've had her with.
you were actually robbed? did they take much?
I dont know whats worse...to be there or not...
It was pretty disturbing to be face to face.
to be in my own room, door closed, and the door just swings open...

thanks erin

They took money & jewellery. They had been through our drawers and things were thrown around. A very unsettling feeling to have some stranger doing those things in your own home. Even now I still feel a bit 'odd' if I hear a strange noise. Once upon a time I would've brushed it off as 'just a noise outside' but now I make sure I check ;)
Still, it would've been awful to have seen the person in your house and have them confront you like that. Still, we are both lucky we are all a-okay and that's definitely something to remember when you feel uneasy :)
